Two gay filmmakers pay $50 to 101 hustlers and ask them to talk about their lives and work. The film is alternately sexy, disturbing and fun.
Sometimes a very simple premise yields surprisingly complex results. And that is the case as documentarians Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey (The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Party Monster) take their camera to Santa Monica Boulevard and a series of motel rooms where they pay $50 each to 101 different male prostitutes not to have sex but to talk about their lives and work. What we see is a fascinating assortment of men (most young, some well past their hustling prime) who reveal themselves to us. Some are gay others gay-for-pay, many are drug addicts struggling to get by while others claim that their life of renting their bodies is a fine way of making a living. Alternately funny and shocking, some of the men (not all 101 get speaking parts) are obviously playing to the camera while others genuinely expose their real selves. They talk about how they got into the business, their first tricks, their real sexual orientation, what they will and won’t do for a buck. A sexy and fascinating film. You’ll never trick the same way again! The video and DVD contain over 30 minutes of additional footage considered too racy for the theaters and cable.

At times irritating, oftentimes sad, and just a bit exploitive, "101 Rent Boys" is nevertheless a fascinating look at the world of male prostitution. It's interesting hearing these men--some quite young, others past their prime, and still others who are young but look 10 years older--give an uncensored account of their lives. Interviewing the subjects in cheap motel rooms was a nice touch; filming the money exchanging hands was not (as one subject, porn star Max Grand, exclaimed: "That's so demeaning!"). There are more than a few recognizable porn stars interviewed, most notably Grand and Will Clark. They're not identified, but they are fairly articulate in their brief interviews. It would've been interesting to hear more about the symbiotic relationship between hustling and porn, but it's never brought up. Of course you hear plenty about drug abuse, broken families and abusive relationships. Fortunately, the filmmakers are neither out to save or there to preach. Even though it has few new revelations, "101 Rent Boys" is worth picking up.
101? Not 101 men as it looks but
