Review

A rather mediocre adaptation of the brilliant Tony Award-winning musical written by Stephen Sondheim (which was based on Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer's Night). Taylor is miscast as Desiree, the actress who re-enters the life of newly married Cariou (repeating his stage role). Rigg steals the show as the wife of soldier Guittard, who is having an affair with Taylor. The film captures none of the magic which made the Bergman film and the stage play great hits. Though "A Weekend in the Country" is performed quite admirably.

It's called "obsession"

Saw the original Broadway production several times . . . most memorable of all was the closing night performance . . . it was magic! Waited with baited breath for the film to be made . . . then wanted to throw my shoes at the movie screen while watching it . . . it was such a huge disappointment. But when you're an "obsessive collector" you look for the Original Broadway Cast albums as well as the Orignal Soundtrack Albums (both of which I have) as well as owning of copy of the movie on video. Will probably never watch it, but "need" to have the DVD edition for my collection!

I saw A Little Night Music when it tried out in Boston; I'm a huge fan of the show. I was truly disappointed in the screen adaptation. I couldn't even watch it beyond a half and hour. Although it has the same music and plot, it has none of the magic that made it Sondheim's most popular show.
