The quest for love has been the theme of many, many movies and it is also the theme of “Bulgarian Lovers”. The film is the story of the love life of Daniel, an architect. He is wild, promiscuous and gay and lives in Madrid. He belongs to a group of gay men who go through men quickly but Daniel really wants to meet the right man and settle down. But he wants perfection in that man—he must be handsome, muscular, and hairy and hung. He finds just that in Kyril, a Bulgarian. The only problem is that Kyril is “straight”. Kyril, in effect, uses Daniel only to satisfy him sexually and since Kyril has no money, he is glad to accept gifts of room and board and clothing. There is, in reality, no relationship between the two except for the symbiotic sex and Kyril constantly talks about his girlfriend.

What Kyril really loves is money and his quest for money is what drives him and causes him to become involved in some shady activities. For these he uses Daniel who even goes so far as to “fix” his immigration papers so he can stay in Madrid. As Kyril drags Daniel into these plots and we in the audience know how this will end—that Kyril will get really involved with the wrong people and Daniel will be charged with abetting a crime and of course end up alone.

When Kyril’s girlfriend, Kalina, turns up in Madrid, matters will really get bad. Daniel is pushed to the side as the lovers come together and Daniel pursues another Bulgarian, Emil but their love making is interrupted by a break in and Emil disappears. Daniel is very jealous of Kalina and Kyril tells him that he and Kalina are returning to Bulgaria for their wedding. Kyril wants Daniel to join them and Daniel becomes attracted to Kyril’s young cousin, Robi but he remains true to Kyril. And so on and so on the movie continues and the two men do not end up together.

I am sure we were supposed to care for Daniel but we don’t. There seems to be nothing to him.
What the film does give us is a look at the gay scene in Madrid. There is some humor and some nice photography but the film is just a small movie that goes nowhere. The acting is quite good but all in all, as a whole, the whole business is quite mediocre.

I liked the "film". Thought that previous review from 2004 was very politically motivated. What I liked were the protagonists - very gay in the self-destructive way many of us are. I could also see the train wreck coming - but, then, we've all been thru this.

I looked for little in this movie but got tons back in fun and sexiness. Then men are HOT and the story is crazy but fun. Some of the nude shots in this picture are so hot you could take this movie to your bedroom and enjoy your "private" moments with yourself even more! Get it!

What a disappointment by director Eloy de las Iglesias. I saw his film "El Dupitado" back in 1990, a great film about a gay lover affair between a closeted Spanish politician under Franco's regime.

This movie---sucked and sucked royally! It played on every pathetic stereotype of gay men. Any self respecting person of Latin American dissent should skip this movie. There was nothing likeable about the protagonist who blindly and foolishly falls for an immigrant Bulgarian man who: 1. Does not identify as gay. 2. Is engaged to a woman. 3. Did not kiss the main character up until the very end. And then I am asked to believe that he is a successful businessman with his own company? The man used him all the way to the end of the film. I was angered and saddened by the end of the film...when will movie makers ever make a film about a Spaniard/Latin American/US Latino who would rather be with another self identifying gay man and not chasing after some twenty something straight guy? This movie pushed back Latino LGBT movement 20 years. What a waste of time and money.

I did not find this film to be depressing at all. In fact, it was lots of fun. Daniel knows exactly what he is getting into with the very sexy Bulgarian but goes ahead anyway. A financially independent out gay men with other out gay friends, he likes the thrills and dangers that lie in dating dubious and possibly dangerous men such as this one. If one chooses to go ahead and enjoy the ride along with Daniel, one will enjoy this movie. And that Bulgarian is sexy and hot!
