Flynn Tomlinson has drifted for several years, working odd jobs when he needs the money and moving on when he doesn't. He's content with his freestyle life, not tied down, not responsible for anyone but himself. Then he comes across a Help Wanted ad in a post office in Idaho and meets Gable Sutton. Gable can't pay Flynn until he sells his horses, but a serious accident has left him unable to work his ranch alone.
Working with horses beats stacking shelves at the supermarket, and so Flynn agrees to Gable's terms. What Flynn doesn't bargain for is being captivated by this gentle, lonely man who captures his heart and moves Flynn to take on an incredible burden: saving Gable's ranch.
Zahra Owens's Clouds and Rain tells the story of Flynn, a young drifter, who stumbles upon an ad for a ranch hand at a local horse farm. In an effort to make a few bucks, Flynn applies to the ranch which is owned by Gable, the physically and emotionally damaged owner. Gable agrees to hire Flynn with the understanding that payment will only come at the end of the season when the horses are sold at auction. The season is filled with unpredictable twists and turns that endear Flynn and Gable to each who quickly realize they have much to learn from one another.
At first, it would appear that horses are the only thing that Flynn and Gable have in common. But, it isn’t long before we learn that these two cowboys also share an interest in handling studs – both of the horse and human persuasion. As we watch their relationship unfold, we learn that both men have significant baggage that complicates their relationship while simultaneously drawing them together. As they move closer to couple-hood, the men must face significant obstacles that challenge their commitment. From an ex-lover to life threatening medical problems to the prospect of becoming fathers, Flynn and Gable come face to face with their own fears and the impact it has on their new relationship.
This story is an easy read that gives the reader insight into each character’s personality and idiosyncrasies. The plot moves very quickly at times, which can be distracting, but the focus on the characters and how they manage through the complexities that life throws at them is truly the focus. It follows a Disney-like outline with an introduction of damaged characters, conflict that threatens their relationship, but ultimately draws them closer together, and then concluding with everything wrapped up in a neat little bow.
