Review

An unusually affecting, sensitively handled and gay-positive made-for-TV drama which marked the directorial debut for actor Ken Olin ("thirtysomething"). Teenager Matt (William McNamara), a star athlete and honor student comes to grips about his homosexuality to both himself and his parents. The revelation strips away the veneer of the "typical" suburban American family and exposes their repressed dysfunctionalities, including alcoholism, abortion, school difficulties and Matt's homosexualty. Matt's confrontation with his parents occurs after he attempts suicide in the family car. When he returns home, he explains, "It's better to be dead than to tell you I'm gay." Jim Carrey also appears as Matt's drunken brother Tim.

Glad to Have Done Time With This Movie

I was glad to have done time with Doing Time on Maple Drive. William McNamara gives a realistic performance as Matt a gay man hiding his sexuality from his family, his fiance, but most of all from himself. His coming out process rocks his family. However, his brother and father come through in ways that most gay men wish theirs would. The movie is sexy and you stay engaged from start to finish. And you leave this movie with hope.
