Synopsis

“Seven months, two weeks and four days,” declares Sheri Campari, an overbearing larger-than-life backstage ballroom matriarch—played with great humor and chutzpah by Melanie LaPatin. While Sheri’s competition days are a distant memory, her determination that the Campari name triumph at the annual South-Eastern Mid West Region Amateur Ballroom Competition is channeled with the ferocity of a tornado through her youngest daughter Tasi. While Tasi goes through the motions of practicing the foxtrot and quickstep with her sister Toni, and with Cedric, her gay dance partner (and Toni’s best friend), she’s nurturing a secret. It’s the reason why her clothes are no longer fitting, she’s pregnant! Toni is too delirious to notice, she’s got a new beau Mona, but she’s not yet found the courage to come-out and tell anybody….just yet. As the competition draws closer, the Campari’s are going to have to re-examine their roles in life and come up with some surprising moves of their own to dazzle the judges.

Wolfe Releasing is going to have a big hit on their hands with “Leading Ladies” and it was just a matter of time that the success of TV’s “Glee” would become part of our movie watching. This is a madcap comedy about two sisters, their gay best friend and their stage mom (shades of Mama Rose). One sister gets pregnant, the other comes out and mama pushes them to continue dancing.

Now a word of warning—to really appreciate this film you must suspend disbelief because the characters are caricatures. Our two sisters have a symbiotic relationship. Tasi Campari is Sharon Lea Smith and she is spoiled and depends totally upon her sister Toni (Laurel Vail) who is nothing to look at but loves and supports her sister. Mama Campari, Sheri (Melanie LaPatin) loves her daughters so much that she drives them crazy. Cedric (Benji Schwimmer) is the girls’ gay best friend and he is also friendly with Mona (Nicole Dionne) who is Toni’s lesbian friend.

The dancing in the film is fantastic and the cast is talented. The movie is fun to watch and it deals with the themes of gay consciousness, family and dance. When Tasi gets pregnant, Mama hopes to groom Toni to take her place and Toni agrees but only if she have her girlfriend Mona as her partner. The movie is a clever low budget look at the world of dance. There is really only one show stopping number which is an overblown dance in a supermarket and is great fun.

Erika Randall Beahm co-wrote and co-choreographed with her husband Daniel who managed the music and produced. It is a fun movie with lots of spirit and will surely be a big hit.
