Synopsis

Based on the novella by Jim Harrison, this sweeping romantic epic is about the Ludlow brothers—two men (Brad Pitt, Aidan Quinn) in love with the same woman (Julia Ormond). Also starring Anthony Hopkins. Directed by Edward Zwick.

Review

Like those fondly remembered soapers of the 1940s, whose stars could help gloss over any screenplay contrivance, Legends of the Fall is an old–fashioned melodrama which, while occasionally overdone in its dramatic construction, never fails to entertain. Beginning just before the start of WWI, the film stars Brad Pitt as one of three sons of a stalwart Montana rancher (Anthony Hopkins). When their youngest brother (Henry Thomas) returns home with a beautiful fiancée (Julia Ormond), siblings Pitt and Aidan Quinn nuture romantic feelings for her. Thus sets in motion an encompassing story of love, betrayal, war and familial ties. Director Edward Zwick allows his actors full range of emotions, and however good the ensemble is, all are upstaged by the sprawling locales and the film's gorgeous cinematography.
