1927, Berlin. Guenther (August Diehl), a well-off prep school student, and his working class poet friend, Paul (Daniel Bruehl), decide to spend a weekend at Guenther’s summer house with the former’s sister, Hilde (Anna Maria Mühe). Paul’s immediately smitten with Hilde, and it seems the attraction is mutual. But Hilde is something of a frisky polyamorist. To wit: she’s secretly dating Hans — Guenther’s former lover, a fact that wouldn’t sit well with her gay, emotionally fragile sibling. When Hans and a group of friends show up at the house, this vacation swells into an explosion of sex, drugs, booze, confused emotions, and bloody consequences. Directed with what Variety dubbed “a heavy dose of swoony, doomed romanticism,” Achim von Borrie’s heady feature was inspired by a real-life Weimar-era scandal, “the Steglitz Student Tragedy” and Arno Meyer Zu Kueingdorf’s novel about the incident, “The Suicide Club.” With queer films like this, as well as Love! The Tragedy Of Love In Thoughts

What can one say, this film can best be desribed as an unrequited love tragedy. The emotional dailances by the characters provide the under lying story for this whole film. It is a rapid roller-coaster ride of scenes complete with physical violence. The ending to this film is one of the most emotional out-bursts of the human spirit. While very unsettling to the audience, this action provides for a sumation and eventual conclusion to this picture. This film should be considerd for your collection. THE EMOTION OF LOVE CAN AND USUALLY WILL OVER-WHELM THE MIND!!! NJMJr!

This film stars Daniel Bruehl who stars in the wonderful film "Ladies in Lavender" with Judy Dench and Maggie Smith. This story is not a gay story though one of the leads is gay and a repressed one. He is in love with his sisters lovers and his best friend is in love with his sister and his sister does not really care for anyone. His sister's best has the hots for her brothers best friend. Where will this lead when 2 of them are playing with the others emotions? It can only lead to tragedy. This story could have been done so much better and the friendship between the 2 guys is not explored enough and we do not get to know the characters enough to like or feel for them. I liked the film as the music and photography were lovely. The acting was believable but it lacked substance in the end. The review above gives more information is a way that the movie. I could not give it more than 2 stars as I expected it to be a lot better than it was.
