Zellweger brings charm to spare to this modest comedy that can't quite deliver on the ambitious, edgy goals it sets for itself. Betty (Zellweger) is a mousy waitress whose customers and fellow employees love her; her abusive husband has considerable less patience and affection. After witnessing his murder at the hands of two hit men, Betty loses her grip on reality and heads out to California to meet the man of her dreams: a doctor on a TV soap she thinks is a real person. On her trail: the two hit men determined to silence her. Director LaBute mixes brutality, screwball humor and quirky characters to tell this original but not fully realized tale of fantasy and reality colliding; a world in which Betty is Being There's Chauncey Gardner and everyone else is from "The Sopranos" via Central Casting. Though there are several scenes that are gloriously rendered, the whole doesn't come together as it should. Freeman is excellent as one of the hit men, whose heart and conscience sends him in a surprising direction.
