Not your usual white-bread gay romance, On the Downlow tells a tragically romantic, almost Shakespearean tale of love between two Southside Chicago Latino gang members. For those who don’t have time to watch Oprah, “on the DL” or “Downlow” refers to “straight” street-wise men who have sex with men on the sly. Angel (Cortez) is a member of the Latin Kings -- he’s also got a secret lover -- Isaac (Sancho,) who’s a member of a rival gang. Their affection takes place under cover of night and in secret places – their relationship is held close to their hearts. When Angel double-crosses the Kings, Isaac uses the opportunity to get his lover into his own gang. First-time director Tadeo Garcia has taken us into a previously unknown world. He says, “One of the themes I like to play around with is that not everything is what it seems…I like to throw people off as much as I can.” Shot entirely on Chicago’s gang-torn streets, the performances, from first-time actors, are first-rate which adds to the sense of authentic street cred. Filled with surprise twists, plenty of suspense and a heightened sense of romance, On the Downlow may just open your eyes.

LOVE ON THE DOWNLOW

This is a story of love in one of the most impossible and /or improbable situations in life. If you have never had to deal with the Hispanic Culture, the story line in this film will have no meaning other than the graphic violence it portrays. The title to this film speaks volumes to the audience. The culture that these two men are in and then fall in love, is a background that I have witnessed first-hand, growing up in San Antonio, TX. I have actually seen this very scenario played out in real life! This film deeply affected me; it is all too real! The Romeo & Juliet ending, was just simply way over the top! This will be a classic film in the top ten. A must for your collection. TRUE LOVE CAN BE FOUND ANYWHERE! LOVE'S SURVIVAL IS WHERE THE TRUE CHALLENGE LIES!!

Worst "gay" movie I've ever seen

Well, actually I haven't seen it all because the movie is so poorly constructed that I couldn't bear to let it play to the end (and believe me I tried several times). What a terrible waste of time and money.

Can't judge a film by its trailer

I must admit that upon viewing the trailer for On The Downlow, I was thoroughly unimpressed. I expected the worst, especially because as a gay Latino, movies of this genre really grab my attention more. I'm excited to say I was proved wrong: this movie is one that should NOT be missed. Michael Cortez and Tony Sancho are terrific actors and their chemistry is palpable on screen. Praises to Tadeo Garcia for tackling such a taboo subject and handling it so well.

A film with substance

A very touching independent film. I got misty-eyed after viewing the ending. The was very tastefully done. They need to make more films like this. The scene with Angel and Issac kissing was excellent.
