SYNOPSIS
A spanish screwball comedy about the dramas of five mothers as they each prepare for their sons' gay wedding.
REVIEW
Queens is a hilarious screwball comedy about of the increasingly frantic lives of five headstrong women (hence the title) as they prepare for their sons’ mass gay marriage ceremony, made possible by Spain’s legalization of same-sex unions. Lead by some of Spain’s most celebrated actresses (and Pedro Almodóvar regulars) including Carmen Maura (
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), Verónica Forqué (
Kika) and Marisa Paredes (
All About My Mother), Queens takes absolute delight in these women’s romantic entanglements and frenzied personal lives which include a famous actress upset that their son is marrying not a man, but the gardener; a meddlesome message therapist; and a nymphomaniac. And then there are the sons -– reacting in their own ways as their impending marriage looms. Taking place all on one frantic weekend, this collective group of drama queens creates mayhem as the clash of sex, anger, bigotry and love threaten the orderly proceedings. With the “I Do’s” pending, will the hearts of the “Queens” find the strength and love to give their sons away on their special day? (Spanish with English subtitles)

Queens Review

This is a wonderful comedic melodrama concerning Spain's first mass
Gay Wedding. It involves five very strong willed/driven mothers from families whose sons just happen to be the ones who are getting married to other men! This provides for some very solid entertainment, especially in the Spanish Culture! This is a total entertainment package that has to be added to your Collection. EVOLUTIONARY ACCEPTANCE OF SAME GENDER UNIFICATION!!!

This movie wasn't a total disaster (insofar as the production values were good), but the story and situations are really hard to swallow. The film is mostly about the relationships of the women, not the gay sons. It was confusing having so many similar-aged women, stories swapping back & forth, constantly having to identify which mother belongs to which son. The situations were far too ridiculous, without being funny. Three of the women are having sex with people that are extremely unlikely to happen in real life. Just not believable. The gay guys are portrayed as weak shells.
Clearly this film concentrates on the mothers and could easily have been about straight children getting married. I feel insulted that the writers think making the children gay instantly makes the situation something to be laughed at. There aren't many films that I find difficult to sit through to the end, but this was one of them.
Note: This DVD is actually 4:3 letterbox (they couldn't be bothered to make it full anamorphic widescreen).
Surprise, Surprise!

I went to this movie expecting somewhat of a campy, slapstick movie. But to my surprise, "Queens" is a great foreign film made in Spain with English subtitles. I will admit it is kinda screwball but never a dull moment. Truly a movie for everyone. This movie will have most straight people in the floor laughing. The storyline jumps back and forth and really keeps you on your toes to keep track of where the storyline currently is. But with the familiarity of the players you get the picture. The interactions between all the players are a kick. I give this one 3.5 Stars and a must see for all your friends and family(straight).
