Synopsis

Dick Fontaine of Richard Anthony Enterprises ( and formally Apollo, then Zenith) was doing physique films even before Athletic Model Guild - AMG (and was a friend of the family when he was a pre-teenager). He has now given up all physique work in favor of doing major general release movies, and he has put all of his 8 and 16mm physique film negatives in our care.

Dick Fontaine was legendary in Hollywood as a male physique photographer. He began his career in 1949, 4 years after Bob Mizer started Athletic Model Guild. His first film was "Always Obtainable" with dancer Guy Mayor. Mayor approached him to make a special "audition film", but whether the film was beneficial to his career, nobody knows. But this first film marked Fontaine's entry into the realm of physique photography and filmmaking.

In 1954, he created the first physique film with sound, "Days of Greek Gods", starring physique stars Bob Delmonteque, Artie Zeller, and Johnny Apollo, all who were well known on the sands of Muscle beach California. Fontaine continued collaborating with Bob Mizer of AMG, and shot most of his film work at the Athletic Model Guild compound throughout the 1950s and 60s.

When he began his mainstream movie career in the 1970s, he turned over all his physique work to AMG, where Mizer continued to sell film prints until his death in 1992. We continue the tradition and have remastered these early film negatives, to bring the work of Richard Fontaine to new audiences once more.

Richard Fontaine along with Bob Mixer are the fathers of the male nude on film. They brought some of the iconic naked men to the screen and some of them are still well known today. The Roman gladiator was one of the fantasies that drew people in (along with the cowboy and the sailor) and the early films about Rome were made with men wearing posing straps. The men in these films were up and coming body builders who wanted exposure and they got it from Mixer and Fontaine’s Athletic Model Guild.
This is a film that is made up of short black and white films of muscular men posing for the camera. The first of them have no sound and a very shallow plot if any at all. As the films progress, plots which are quite silly are added and the acing goes from bad to awful. There is no sex and the only complete frontal nudity comes with the very last film.
However, the men are good looking and have beautiful bodies even though what we see is quite repetitious. We must remember that these films heralded the coming of porn and for this reason this film is important. These films are what led to full frontal nudity.
Fontaine was legendary as a photographer of the male body which he began doing as early 1949. Mixer started AMG in 1945 and the two men came together to produce “Always Obtainable”. This film was made in 1954 and actually has sound and appearance by such men as Johnny Apollo, Artie Zeller and Bob Delmonteque.
Fontaine left AMG to pursue a career in film and when e did he gave Mixer all of his previous physique films which Mixer sold until he died in 1992. These old films have now been remastered and new audiences get the chance to see what the beginnings of porn provided early on.
