From the makers of The Endless Summer, Step into Liquid takes us from the terrifying monstrous waves of Oahu's North Shore to the Texas waters of the Gulf of Mexico (where the waves are created by massive oil supertankers) to the shores of Ireland and Rapa Nui. Told through the voices of legends, pros, and everyday surfers alike, it is not just a film for surfers, but for anyone with an appreciation for sport and an inkling of what it means to be "stoked." Filmed without special effects, just like the Bruce Brown films; director Dana Brown, not coincidentally, is Bruce's son.
Make no mistake, the true stars of Dana Brown's directorial debut are the waves, and the surfers who inhabit these waters and utilize the force of the waves help to complete this beautiful documentary with entertaining and inspirational anecdotes about their experiences. Combine this with Brown's easy spoken commentary and breathtaking cinematography, and Step Into Liquid is fantastic viewing.
This tribute to the surfing lifestyle features the talents and memories of some of the greatest surfers from past (Robert August, Endless Summer) to present (Kelly Slater), as well as some promising new talent (Taj Burrows). Brown’s efforts to reveal the universal bond that all surfers share focuses on male and female alike, and, in one particularly exciting sequence, surfers Layne Beachley, Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly are shown ripping up the waves harder and tougher than their male counter-parts.
From the more renowned surf locations of the world to lesser known secret spots, incredible interviews and insightful glimpses into the lives of surfers, Brown takes the work of his father (director Bruce Brown, Endless Summer) even further in his exploration of the culture of surfing. However, Step Into Liquid is not a "surfer's only" movie – this well-directed and well-composed documentary offers something for everyone with its captivating insight and amazing action sequences filmed on location from some of the most beautiful vistas on the globe.
