Synopsis

Misses The Point Entirely

Clare Boothe Luce's play is an acid satire on the wages of idleness and lack of self awareness among a class of women Ms. Luce believed should be leading the revolution instead of hosting parties for the oppressors. So I should have known what was coming when I read a pre-release interview with Diane English where she complained that the original story disturbed her because the women were all so mean to each other and obsessed with being married. O--o-o-k-a-y-y-y-. Instead of updating this still-relevant message about women who subordinate their own obvious strengths for social prestige (Ms. Bush...? Laura...?) we are handed a muddle of peudo-postfeminist stereotypes and a completely inappropriate message on sisterhood (it's about effecting change people, not just self-contentment). Plus there's so much scenery chewing it's amazing the sets don't collapse right on camera. Do yourselves a favor, watch the original.
