Synopsis

To Play or to Die is a powerful psychological drama. Kees is an introverted boy who attends an all-boy Dutch school where powerful bullies and sadomasochistic games are the stock in trade. Kees is fascinated by the extraordinarily handsome Charel, ringleader of the tormenters. Seeking to turn the tables and stem his victimization, Kees invited Charel back to his house when his parents are away. His plan is to take revenge buy Charel gets the upper hand. So begins a difficult and painful pas de deux with surprising results.

To Play or to Die recalls the memories of loneliness and victimization familiar to any gay teen and turns them into an intense and well-made thriller. The film is based on a story by Anna Blaman and marks the feature film debut of Frank Krom, former assistant to Paul Verhoeven.

Review

Filmed with unusual flair for a small independent film, this hyperventilating, psychosexual drama tells the story of a nerdish teenager's intense crush on a bullying but attractive classmate. With his parents away, 15-year-old Kees, fueled by a masochistic puppy love for the unresponsive and cruel Charel, finds his plans for seduction and revenge unraveling after he invites the other to his home. A simple premise, and while not at all homophobic, its theme of equating homosexual desire with madness and death is a sad, frustrating one, especially problematic coming from a promising gay filmmaker. _Tragic Orgasm_ would be a good subtitle for the film, as you will see a boy in his late teens. There is a fresh wound on his fresh face. He slips his hand inside his trousers. We see him only from the waist up, as he makes a long and sexually exhilarating journey towards his Tragic Orgasm!
