From the maker of I Think I Do comes this surprisingly funny and erotic film about a roommate search from hell in the shadow of the World Trade Center.

Review

Adapting his own stage play, Brian Sloan (I Think I Do) has crafted a highly emotional film about a young gay man who needs a new roommate to share his apartment with a World Trade Center view. Set in the weeks after September 11, 2001, Eric's life, like those all of the area’s residents, was changed forever and he bravely tries to continue with on his prior course. Eric decides he wants to stay in his apartment and he interviews potential roommates learning their 9/11 stories and he slowly reveals his own story. The stories get more and more intense as this powerful and very personal story unfolds. There’s the straight British fellow who just can’t seem to close the deal. And then there’s the sexy guy who stays the night for a cuddle and more! With stunning performances from the entire cast and especially from Michael Urie as Eric, WTC View is one of the dramatic highlights of the year.

Media Quotes

  • “Persuasively depicts the effect of the tragedy upon Eric, whose apartment is only 12 blocks away. Although by and large a filmed play, the film is not static, and its theatricality is engaging. Sloan’s unpretentious approach pays off especially well in a long sustained sequence in which Eric, verging on a nervous breakdown, is comforted by one of his potential roommates.” — Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times

  Excrutiating BORE!

dannydc wrote on 10/14/2006:

This film was one of the most excrutiating, boring 104 minutes anyone could sit through! The entire film was nothing but the main character; Eric, pissing and moaning about how tragic his life has been since 9/11. It got to the point after about ten minutes of this worthless film that I didn't even care. It grated on my last nerve to where I was hoping whenever Eric was near the window, he would jump out and put us all out of his misery. His so called best friend; a female by the name of Josie was just as irritating if not more so than Eric. I can't imagine anyone being around this poor, pathethic individual. Don't waste your money on buying this loser!

I liked Brian Sloan's book, Really Nice Prom Mess-Did not like WTC

Movie was bad. I guess the fact that mostly everything takes place in an mostly empty bedroom looking out a fake window, just really didn't do it for me.

Acting was overdone - and where did they get the actress that played Josie? She had the personality of my accountant.

I regret buying the film...

  3 STARS, 4 WHITE HANKIES

First: Buy yourself a box of tissues.
Second: Be prepared to see a young actor who should be working with his equals (Streep, Redgrave).
After you've wiped the tears from your eyes, you'll ask, "Who is that young man?"
It's Michael Urie, and I hope we see a lot more of him in the near future.

  Understated yet emotionally powerful masterpiece

bigbearphx wrote on 08/15/2006:

Eric's roommate gave him notice that he would be moving out of his SoHo (south Manhattan) apartment, so Eric put an ad in the Village Voice for a new roommate. The date was September 10, 2001.

Over the next several weeks, Eric's phone rang constantly with people interested in the apartment, which they are stunned to learn has a "WTC View" (2005), about 12 blocks from "Ground Zero." Much has been written and portrayed about the apparent tough, grim determination of the residents of New York City in the weeks following 9/11. What this film shows, quite effectively through the characters in this film (including a diverse stream of potential roommates) is the raw emotion they each dealt with in some manner, dealing with lives that had changed dramatically by the events of that fateful day. As his visitors talk about their experiences, Eric tries to relate to their feelings, as he deals with his own repressed shock from witnessing the devastation, manifested in panic every time the lights flicker or he hears a siren in the night, and faces a personal loss he didn't realize would affect him. His best friend, Josie, suffers marital problems, with the uncertainty following the attacks clouding their plans to have a child. Eric also connects with one potential roommate who was in one of the towers on that day, but who ends up holding Eric throughout the night as the thoughts of the attack trigger one of his frequent panic attacks.

"WTC View" was written/directed/produced by gay novelist Brian Sloane, who first produced it for a New York City stage festival, using the same actors who appear in the film. The story is loosely based on true events, as he actually had advertised his downtown Manhattan apartment to share the day before the attacks.

In my opinion, the film is an understated yet emotionally powerful masterpiece, with remarkable performances from its cast of young actors. Although it takes place solely in Eric's apartment, it incorporates photos of the post-9/11 New York City in its segues between scenes, but wisely avoids any scenes of the attacks or Ground Zero. If you are going to see one "WTC" film this year, make it this one.

  Nicely done

Eric Joseph wrote on 08/13/2006:

Nicely done movie that has a lot of heart to it. Based on a stage play, the movie focuses on a gay man trying to find a new roommate after the events of 9/11... As potential roommates come scout out the apartment, stories and experiences of the disaster are shared... Appreciate how they focused on human emotion rather than showing the actual disaster itself... all is talked about rather than seen. Good choice and much more moving that way I believe. A definite recommendation...
